Witchcraft Over Pendle
Almost four centuries after their execution the memory of the Lancashire Witches still haunts Pendle Hill.
The story might have been forgotten but for two bestsellers: The Lancashire Witches (1848) and Mist over Pendle (1951) which revived the tale of superstition and revenge.
The trial in 1612 of members of two feuding families of self confessed witches created a national sensation which, centuries after they hanged at Lancaster, still leaves questions unanswered.
This dark tale is a thread for exploring the heights of Pendle Hill, ancient villages Barley and Newchurch-in Pendle and historic houses such as Towneley Hall Burnley. Pendle Heritage Centre Barrowford continues to investigate the case.
‘Witch Country’ tours are available: the Pendle Witches Trail self drive audio tour; Pendle Scenic Car Trail and the Walking with Witches Trail. Plus at Witches Galore in Newchurch … some most unusual souvenirs!
