Tour de France Open Meeting

Posted: 21.06.13

Tour de France fever can reach further than the route on race day – businesses and communities are invited to find out more.

A Tour de France open meeting will be held at Rossendale Borough Council Chamber, Futures Park, Bacup, between 6pm and 7.30pm on Monday, July 1, to discuss the business and community potential the world’s largest annual sporting event will bring to the area.

“The Grand Depart of the Tour De France is coming to the South Pennines in July 2014. To find out more about the successful bid to host the race and what your business and community can do right now to benefit join us at the open meeting in Bacup,” said Mark Turner, of Pennine Prospects, the rural regeneration company organising the event in partnership with Rossendale Council.

The meeting will give in local businesses and communities the chance to discuss the opportunities that the influx of millions of tourists, before, during and after the event, will bring to the area and the benefits of world-wide media coverage during the build-up and as the race is televised live to millions more around the world.

“There have been a number of meetings held already that have inspired people to get into the spirit of Le Tour,” explained Mark. “Some areas are organising French evenings and in Cragg Vale there’s going to be an attempt to make the world’s longest stretch of bunting. These meetings are all about bringing people together so they can bounce ideas around and find out what everyone else will be doing.

“The race is taking place only a few miles from Bacup and there will be opportunities for the businesses of this area to benefit from the huge number of people who will want to visit the South Pennines, to explore this beautiful part of the world, to ride the actual route and to watch the race itself. This will have a huge impact on the South Pennines and we want to make sure everyone benefits,” Mark added.

The meeting will include an update on Welcome to Yorkshire’s successful bid to host the Grand Depart in 2014; information on plans for a cultural festival in the 100 days prior to the Tour De France; tips and tricks to make the most of the area’s proximity to the race and the massive numbers of additional visitors; an opportunity to ask any questions about the Tour De France and the opportunity to plan local events and activities to make the most of the biggest annual sporting event in the world.

Further meetings will take place in Littleborough, on Thursday, July 11, from 6pm to 7.30pm, at the Conservative Club, Peel Street; in Saddleworth on Tuesday, July 23, venue and time to be arranged; and in Burnley, date and venue to be arranged.
