A bizarre race and two short film premieres will launch the 2013 South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival programme this year.

The South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival will mark the launch of its 2013 programme with a celebration of all things cycling, walking and horse riding on Friday, July 5, from 6.30pm, at the old Cycle Speedway Track, Hollins Park, in Sowerby Bridge.

Everyone is invited to attend the launch at which there will be a repeat of the popular Great Pie Tweed Race and much more.

“Cyclists will take part in heats of Cycle Speedway races, dressed in traditional tweed, with winners receiving locally made pies, and the overall winner a huge 4lb pork pie, complete with bike motif,” explained Sue Leffman, festival co-ordinator.

“The evening will continue at the nearby Puzzle Hall Inn, with live music, locally produced Thai food, local award winning beers and an outdoor screening that will feature the premiere of two newly commissioned short films for the festival “A Grand Depart” and “The Magic Tenner” and other South Pennines based films,” Sue added.

This year the Walk and Ride Festival, now in its sixth year, will take place between Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 22. There will be over 150 events, the biggest yet, from a one mile health walk to a gruelling 47 mile mountain bike ride, and all with volunteer guides and organisers who have expert knowledge of the area and terrain.

Volunteer guides and event organisers will gather for the programme launch on July 5, where everyone will be able to find out more and receive the ‘hot off the press’ programmes to take out to all corners of the South Pennines, from Bradford to Saddleworth and Calderdale to Rossendale.

The emphasis on all things cycling in this year’s Walk and Ride programme launch is in anticipation of Grand Depart of the Tour De France 2014, which will be exactly one year to the day of this event. Day two of Le Tour will pass through the South Pennines.
